Thundersport GB "The Starmaker!"
Last weekend saw the opening round of the 2011 British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch in Kent. Amongst all of the action that took place current Thundersport GP3 Cup Champion Luke Hedger took his first of we hope many, British Championship race wins. The Bristol youngster kept his head in the re-started race to fend off the other ex-Thundersport GB regulars; Wayne Ryan, Harry Hartley, Matthew Davies, Callan Cooper and Tom Carne in the battle for the podium.
The competition in the Thundersport GB GP3 Championship is so tough that the only rider to dip under the current Thundersport lap record was class of the field Kyle Ryde who suffered a mechanical problem whilst leading by over 4 seconds from eventual winner Hedger. An amazing 21 of the 36 qualifiers for the British Championship 125 GP race came from the Thundersport GB Championship and this ratio is reflected in the other feeder classes within the BSB paddock. Every great river has a source and it's exactly the same with great championships. Thundersport GB and its core classes centered around the
Aprilia Superteen Championship are really providing the future (and current) crop of riders for BSB, WSB and Moto GP level. There are multiple paths within the Thundersport Championships for riders of all ages to develop their talents at different rates and using strategies that are tailored to the individuals needs, rather than trying to create a "One size fits all" solution. That might suit most organisers but it just isn't the Thundersport way.
Anyone looking at a career in motorcycle racing, needs only to look at the remarkable success of the riders that have come through the Thundersport Academy of Speed over its first three and a half years to see that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Competition is tough, but it's also fair and the biggest part of the recipe is the Sporting Ethos that is such an important part of building the complete motorcycle racer in the modern world.
